Raw, natural beauty was a big trend last winter and this time around it’s bigger and more radiant than ever.
A glowing complexion will take you from winter into spring; it can be a stand-alone feature or be paired with other seasonal beauty trends (such as metallic eyes or bright lips).
The key to beautifully radiant skin is a flawless canvas to work with, so it’s essential that you take good care of your skin and do the prep work involved to pull off this look.
Start by hydrating your skin from the inside out with at least 8 glasses of filtered water a day. We all know how good water is for us and there’s really no excuse not to drink it. I drink a glass of lemon water as soon as I wake up and keep a large bottle at my desk to drink throughout the day.
Feed your face
Certain foods such as leafy green vegetables, oily cold water fish (tuna, salmon and mackerel) and berries regenerate and protect the skin for premature ageing. Add blueberries to yoghurt or oats for breakfast and make an effort to eat oily fish at least once a week.
Regular exercise improves blood circulation, which means that more nutrients will be transported to the skin. Fresh air oxygenates the skin cells, so outdoor workouts are even more beneficial for the skin. I try include a hike or walk along the promenade in my weekly exercise schedule.
Weekly exfoliation removes nasty dead skin cells and reveals refreshed, smoother skin. With so many exfoliating products on the market, we really are spoiled for choice, but keep in mind that certain exfoliators are suited better to specific skin types. Scrubs with micro-beads tend to work best for combination to oily skin types as they unclog pores; while chemical exfoliators containing alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), such as glycolic acid or citric acid, target the deeper layers of the skin and do wonders for drier skins. However, I have combination skin and I use Clarins Gentle Exfoliator Brightening Toner (which contains fruit acids).
Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise
I have repeated it three times to emphasise how important this step is. You’ll never achieve a fresh face if your skin is dehydrated and dry. Up your glow factor by applying a radiance-boosting cream to your skin every morning. I love the light texture of Vichy Idealia Smoothing and Illuminating Cream which leaves my face with a soft glow. I treat my skin to a rich cream at night and massage it in well with my fingertips to stimulate blood flow.
If I’m in the mood for dewy, lit-from-within skin, I mix a few drops of my favourite highlighter Yardley Radiant Glow Illuminator with my foundation. Alternatively, you can use a highlighter pen on the cheekbones, cupid’s bow and browbones for a more contoured look.
